A thrilling display of teamwork, talent, and tenacity unfolded in the surf at Kirra Beach as students from Xavier Catholic College, Ballina, proudly competed in the 2025 Australian Interschool Surfing Championship (AISC), held at the iconic Kirra Superbank on the Gold Coast, a dream location known for its clean, powerful waves that drew over 100 teams from 65 schools across the country.
Showing grit and skill, the Xavier team carved its way through the early rounds. Although the Junior and Senior Boys’ teams were narrowly eliminated in the early finals, their sharp strategy and cohesive teamwork stood out in the demanding 30-minute heats.
With ideal offshore winds and 3–5 foot swell on the final day, Xavier’s Junior and Senior Girls’ teams powered through the quarter and semi-finals, finishing fifth and sixth nationally.
‘Competing against institutions renowned for their elite surfing academies, the Junior and Senior Girls' teams from Xavier College attained fifth and sixth place nationally, an outcome that significantly surpassed pre-competition expectations,’ said Leader of Sport Clint McCarthy.
The sibling synergy of the Mundy and Hudson sisters, alongside the steady leadership of Senior students Josh Thomas, Owen Kilby, Joe Tancred, Calvin Greely, and Reuben Sharpe, brought strength and unity to the team.
Xavier proudly secured sixth place overall, a testament to talent, teamwork, and the dedication of surf coach James Wood, whose early morning training sessions continue to shape the team’s competitive edge.
