As part of St Francis Xavier Primary School, Ballina, Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion fundraiser, Year 6 students led a whole-school Walk for Water, raising awareness and funds for children without access to clean water.

What started as a Religious Education unit evolved into a powerful student-led campaign of compassion, prayer and action. Their initiative reflects the heart of Catholic education: forming young people grounded in justice, service and empathy.

‘Their passion for justice and empathy for others has been truly inspiring,’ said Year 6 teachers Danielle Nilan and Chris Hosie.

The walk itself extended learning far beyond the classroom. Students carried water through the streets of Ballina, offering a small glimpse into the daily struggles faced by millions without easy access to clean water.

This meaningful initiative not only raised funds for Caritas projects overseas but also inspired empathy, advocacy, and action within the local community.

‘People who have to walk long distances for water don’t have time for anything else. They can’t read, they can’t go to school, they can’t talk with their friends,’ said Year 6 student Hugo.

‘Everyone deserves a fair shot at getting clean water and education,’ said Year 6 student Evie.

The success of the Walk for Water at St Francis Xavier is a testament to what can be achieved when a school community comes together with a shared sense of purpose.

‘By sharing our knowledge of the work of Caritas, we hope to continue to inspire the local community and foster a culture of service and compassion for years to come,’ said Assistant Principal - Mission, Kasey Miles.

In the end, this event was not just a walk. It was a powerful reminder of the impact of faith in action and the difference one community can make in the world.
