St Peter’s Primary School, Port Macquarie, came alive with a vibrant display of colour as students and staff gathered to celebrate Harmony Day, a day dedicated to embracing diversity and promoting inclusion. Dressed in bright orange or traditional cultural attire, the school community reflected the unity and multicultural spirit of the occasion.
The celebrations were made even more special thanks to the involvement of several school families, who set up interactive cultural displays that offered a glimpse into their unique heritages. Families proudly shared their traditions and cultures, showcasing a variety of artefacts from Indian, Dutch, Mexican, Lebanese, and Tongan/Pacific Islander backgrounds. The displays were a feast for the eyes, providing students and visitors with the opportunity to learn about the significance of each cultural item.
The school grounds were buzzing with excitement as children decorated themselves with beautiful henna tattoos and delicate bindis, symbols of Indian culture. Others joyfully played ukuleles, sharing the musical richness of various cultural traditions.
Food was also a highlight of the festivities, with cultural delicacies from around the world available for tasting. From Lebanese bread to Dutch biscuits, the celebration became a sensory journey, allowing students to explore new flavours and appreciate the food traditions of their classmates.
‘The event was a fantastic opportunity for students to not only showcase their own cultures but also learn from and appreciate the diverse backgrounds of their peers,’ said Assistant Principal - Mission Rebecca Cameron.
The celebration served as a beautiful reminder of the importance of respect, understanding, and inclusivity, and we look forward to next year’s Harmony Day festivities.
