St Joseph's Primary prioritised implementing a sustainable Breakfast Club, which fosters student wellbeing by providing a nutritious start to the day, building community connections, and improving attendance through a warm and inclusive initiative. (20 November 2024)
A warm and welcoming start to the school day has become a treasured tradition at St Joseph’s Primary School, Port Macquarie, with the launch of their successful Breakfast Club. The school utilised the Government Student Wellbeing Boost funds and generous donations from the community to create an inviting and purposeful space for the whole community.
The idea was born from a growing need to support students arriving at school hungry, whether due to long commutes or skipping breakfast at home. Recognising that children learn and thrive best when well-fed, the school stepped in to fill the gap. This student wellbeing initiative ensures every child begins their day with a nutritious meal and a smile.
‘We wanted to make sure every student has the chance to start their day on the right foot,’ said a member of the pastoral team.
The renovated space was launched in October with the support of local trades Neverlate Electrical, Designer Living Kitchens, Affordable Plumbing, Port Garage Doors, Matt Moretti and Frontier Assembly.
Approximately 100 students access the bread and fresh fruit provided by Bakers Delight Settlement City, Woolworths, and Ken Little’s Fruit and Veg each week. As older students support younger ones, a strong sense of community has developed.
Staff have recognised an improvement in school attendance since the initiative started. Students who were irregular attendees now arrive regularly for breakfast and positive social connections.
The initiative has extended to inviting families to meet on Wednesday mornings for a chat and a coffee. Building Community—Wednesdays Done Right aims to strengthen family and school partnerships.
The Breakfast Club has become a cherished part of St Joseph’s, proving that with community support, meaningful change is possible. As one parent shared, ‘It’s more than just breakfast—it’s about creating a sense of belonging and starting the day right.’
