The St Mary’s Primary School, Casino, community came together last week to honour Principal John O’Brien, celebrating his remarkable 10 years of leadership with a heartwarming surprise event filled with love and gratitude from students, staff, and families.

John was met with the surprise of a lifetime when he arrived at school to find over 600 ‘mini Mr O’Briens’ greeting him as students and staff dressed up in his signature style for a special ‘Dress Like Mr O’Brien’ Day. The school community’s creative tribute captured the spirit of fun and connection that has defined John’s decade of leadership.

The event reflected John’s commitment to fostering joy, belonging, and a vibrant school environment. Students eagerly shared their favourite memories, including the beloved Truck Playground, a feature John envisioned and brought to life. “He knows us Casino kids and what we love—sport, farming, and digging in the sand—and he’s made playgrounds with all of this in mind because he wants us to love coming to school,” one student shared.

The celebration also highlighted John’s dedication to his staff and the broader school community. As one staff member remarked, ‘John believes in his team, encourages innovation, and walks the journey with us.’

This heartfelt surprise was a fitting tribute to a leader who has transformed St Mary’s into a thriving, joyful community where ‘kids love to come every day’ and families feel deeply connected. John’s legacy of innovation, faith, and care will undoubtedly inspire the school for generations to come.
