St Joseph's Primary School, Laurieton, celebrated cultural connection and creativity as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students collaborated on an art mural and performance, fostering unity and respect within the school community.
Cultural connection and creativity came to life at St Joseph’s Primary School, Laurieton, as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students collaborated with an artist in residence, Nardja, to create a meaningful Art Mural for the school’s Cultural Creative Arts Showcase.
The project began with heartfelt discussions where students shared their identities and stories, painting boomerangs as personal expressions of self. These vibrant creations became an integral part of the student’s cultural dance during the showcase, weaving their art and stories into a powerful performance.
Nardja and the students also led fish weaving workshops, sharing cultural knowledge with the wider school community and fostering respect and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions.
The highlight of this journey was the unveiling of the Art Mural during the ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ at the showcase. This stunning collaboration, rich with meaning and cultural pride, will soon be installed on an outside wall of the school, serving as a permanent symbol of unity and celebration.
Through this project, St Joseph’s has strengthened its commitment to cultural connection and shared understanding, creating an enduring legacy for the entire school community.
