Shining a Light on Diwali at St Francis Xavier’s Primary School, Woolgoolga

St Francis Xavier Primary School, Woolgoolga, celebrated Diwali with a vibrant event, uniting students, families, and the community to honour cultural diversity through performances, activities, and shared traditions. (8 November 2024)

St Francis Xavier Primary School, Woolgoolga, celebrated its brightest Diwali yet, uniting students, staff, and the community. The school hall glowed with lights, candles, and student-made decorations, creating a joyful setting for cultural celebration.

The festivities kicked off with a lively assembly led by the Diwali Team, featuring live drumming, a vibrant SFX Punjabi Dance Team performance, and a whole-school dance. Students and staff embraced Diwali’s spirit, learning about its significance while celebrating with school families, extended Indian families, parishioners, and local community members.

Throughout the day, students delighted in Diwali-themed discos, craft activities, and delicious Indian treats. The celebration, supported by a grant from Together for Humanity, reflected the school’s commitment to promoting intercultural understanding and unity. 

‘This year’s Diwali celebration brought even greater pride and a stronger sense of belonging for our Indian students and community. It’s a privilege to honour these traditions and foster an inclusive environment that celebrates all cultures,’ said Laura Cooke, Leader of EALD (English as an Additional Language or Dialect).

For many students, the day was both fun and meaningful. 

‘I love that we celebrate Diwali at my school. It’s such a fun day, and I feel so proud to share my culture with my school community,’ said Year 5 student Keerat.

‘The food was amazing. I loved being able to try lots of new and different things,’ said Year 2 student Willow.

The Diwali celebration at St Francis Xavier’s was a shining example of community, culture, and connection, reflecting the school’s dedication to inclusivity and the vibrant contributions of its Sikh and Indian communities.
