A vibrant celebration of Harmony Day was held at Mary Help of Christians Primary School, Sawtell. (21 March 2024)
Mary Help of Christians Primary School, Sawtell, was abuzz with preparations for Harmony Day, led by the motivated Year 6 class under the guidance of teachers Melanie Morgan and Brendan Murphy. Eager to make a positive impact, the class decided to participate in a songwriting and filmmaking competition hosted by Moving Forward Together, an organisation dedicated to promoting harmony and inclusivity in Australian society.
The competition challenged students to create a song or short film on the theme ‘Harmony - What Can We Do?’ The students engaged in an inspiring session with Clarence Pastoral Care Officer Rob Imeson to kickstart their creative journey. Rob explored values, character strengths, the beauty of our unique differences, and the fundamental concept of human rights. Drawing inspiration from renowned figures such as Mem Fox, Missy Higgins, Mary Fowler, Anh Do, Jessica Mauboy, and Troy Cassar-Daley, the students divided into two groups, one focusing on songwriting and the other on filmmaking, for the remainder of the day.
In the realm of songwriting, the students penned memorable lines reflecting their insights and aspirations:
‘Orange is the colour, love one another…’
‘I belong, You belong, We belong…’
‘Orange is the colour for harmony, diversity, equality…’
Reflecting on the enriching experience, both students and staff shared their thoughts:
Lachlan expressed his delight in learning about new cultures and found the filmmaking process particularly fascinating.
Leo appreciated Rob's inclusive approach in incorporating everyone's ideas and relished discovering the diverse musical tastes of his peers.
Teacher Mel Morgan commended the students for their wholehearted engagement, observing how they grasped the essence of Harmony Day and translated it into their creative endeavours.
Lacey found joy in exploring various music genres and found inspiration in crafting lyrics that resonated with the themes of Harmony Day.
Harmony Day at Mary Help of Christians Primary School was marked by enthusiasm, creativity, and a genuine commitment to fostering harmony and inclusivity within the school community.
