During Week 9, more than ninety new educators in their first or second year of teaching came together for the Graduate Formation Program. Over three immersive days in Ballina, Coffs Harbour, and Port Macquarie, the program aimed to give a thorough introduction to teaching within the Diocese of Lismore.

The program covered important topics like our mission, quality teaching methods, building partnerships with families, supporting student mental health, and looking after personal well-being. It also provided a chance for new educators to connect and network with each other.

The Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools is dedicated to supporting new teachers in our schools. The two-year Graduate Formation Program focuses on helping teachers develop their skills through mentoring, coaching, and professional learning.

‘The Graduate Formation Systems days complement the excellent work done in schools by School Mentors (Accreditation Supervisors) and other colleagues on a daily basis to collectively provide a thorough orientation and induction for the beginning teacher. There was great energy, enthusiasm and collegiality displayed by participants who clearly bring these qualities to the classroom and school to benefit the school community,’ said Leisa Fisher, Lead Teacher Accreditation.

Participants echoed this sentiment, sharing their insights from the program.

‘I found the day very helpful. I learned about why we do what we do, talked to other teachers, and understood that we all have complexities that we are managing. I feel much more aware of the proficiency process and am not just trying to rush through now; I am just letting it be more of an organic, developmental process,’ said new teacher Jacinta Forestal from Xavier Catholic College, Ballina.

‘I really appreciate the support and time beginning teachers are given,’ said new teacher Laura George from St Francis Xavier Primary School, Woolgoolga.

The Diocese thanks all incoming teachers and looks forward to supporting them through an induction program focused on practical skills as they become effective educators. These new teachers will reconvene in Term 4 to continue their professional development journey.
