Congratulations to an extraordinarily talented group of young cricketers from St John’s College, Lismore, who dominated the 2022 - 2023 Berg Shield Tournament.
The Berg Shield is a New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges cricket T20 knock-out tournament for Under 15s.
St John’s Berg Shield team blasted its way through each round due to impressive team performances, from Lismore to the finals in Sydney.
‘This is one of the most talented groups of young cricketers that I have been involved with. They all played a part, either big or small, in this special achievement. To top it off, they are all fine young men,’ said cricket coach Luke Collings.
Pushing hard in the semi-finals, St John’s came up against stiff competition from All Saints College, Maitland, narrowly winning 86 - 65 before smashing Xavier High School, Albury, in the final with an outstanding final score 114 - 44.
Each player contributed their bit to the teams' success, right down to Yr 9 student Tom McPhee taking the winning wicket in the Berg Final. This is the third time St John’s College has won the tournament.
‘This was an amazing experience to travel around the state playing cricket with the boys. To win the Berg Shield representing Woodlawn is something we will remember forever,’ said team captain and Yr 10 student Rory McLean.
This is a fantastic group of students, brought closer together by cricket, who have persevered through the flood and pandemic to achieve an incredible milestone.
