This week we begin to explore the powerful ways in which a great Catholic school can shape a deep understanding of life, faith and culture.
The documents state ‘From the nature of the catholic school also stems one of the most significant elements of its educational project: the synthesis between culture and faith. Indeed, knowledge set in the context of faith becomes wisdom and life vision. The endeavour to interweave reason and faith, which has become the heart of individual subjects, makes for unity, articulation and coordination, bringing forth within what is learnt in school, a Christian vision of the world, of life of culture and of history’. (The Catholic School on the threshold of the Third Millennium, 14)
A Catholic vision of human personhood and life is deeply rooted in scripture, tradition and the fact that Jesus Christ took flesh, for God to enter human life in such a radical way shows just how precious human life is.

St Joseph's Regional College Students Selected to Participate in University of Sydney Program
Four Year 10 and 11 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from St Joseph's Regional College, Port Macquarie were selected from over 300 applicants to participate in the University of Sydney's 'Wingara Mura - Bunga Barrabugu Summer Program' to be held in December. Students were selected based on their motivation to succeed, committment to their studies and who are active in their communities. The four day program allows students to experience first hand what university would be like. The students will stay on campus, access and attend the world class facilities and build relationships with current students and staff at the university.
It is an opportunity to investigate different subject areas and experience life as a university student. The students are able to select from programs including Architecture, Visual Arts, Design and Planning, Business and Economics, Education and Social Work, Health Science and Nursing, Humanities and Law, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy, Music and Natural Science and Engineering.
Congratulations St Joseph's Regional College students and the staff who supported them through the application process. We are sure you'll enjoy this wonderful experience.

Expressions of Interest – Student Discipleship Formation Program Convenors 2020
An invitation is extended to teachers to express an interest in becoming a Student Discipleship Formation Program Convenor for 2020. Program Convenors will be required to coordinate the preparation and delivery of specific student discipleship programs across the Diocese of Lismore. This opportunity will assist in the development of leadership capacity and empower more staff in student discipleship formation throughout parish schools. Appropriate relief will accompany this role.
Staff who would like to pursue a Student Discipleship Formation Program Convenor position in 2020 should read the attached memo for further details or seek information from Matt de Dassel, School Evangelisation Consultant.
Program Builder: Cohort logins
The NSW Standards Authority (NESA) recently changed the way that teachers in Catholic schools login to Program Builder. To review these changes, please see The Way Term 4 Week 3.
This change was communicated with late notice. Since the change, it has become apparent that the “cohort logins” for Program Builder have been affected.
Staff from Technology Services and Learning Services are currently working on a solution to this problem in collaboration with Catholic Education Network (CEnet). Schools will be kept updated as to the progress of this work. In the meantime, if you or teachers at your school have been affected by this problem with cohort logins, please lodge a helpdesk request.

Learning Services has recently made a significant investment in ensuring that our schools have access to quality Digital Technology resources. Along with the added resources available to schools, a new booking system to reserve and manage these assets has been implemented. The aim of this initiative, is for schools to borrow and trial new equipment on a short term basis, before choosing to invest themselves. Equipment includes Osmo, 360 camera, Makey Makey, drones and more.
This new online based system is called REFTAB and is available to all staff throughout the diocese. Any staff member can login to REFTAB to see what assets are available and have the ability to reserve these items as needed. The bookings will be monitored and processed by the Catholic Schools Office.
Please follow this LINK for the REFTAB Quickstart Guide.

The rebuild of the CSO Intranet is underway. A new provider Elcom, has been engaged to design and build the new Intranet platform. A design workshop with participants representing varying years of experience and positions of responsibility including Principals, Leaders of Learning, Year Coordinators, Classroom Teachers and 2nd Year Graduate Teachers was undertaken and gave voice to what is needed from the new intranet to better support school based staff in their roles.
We are working with Elcom to create a user experience that can be customised by each user, that has highly responsive search functionality and is a ‘Grab n Go’ experience, whereby it will be easier to locate what you need and go on to the next task. We will include updates on the progress of the intranet development in ‘The Way’. The intranet is scheduled for launch in mid 2020.
Any queries regarding the redevelopment of the CSO Intranet platform contact Leesa Kwok - Media and Communications Consultant who is managing the intranet project at media@lism.catholic.edu.au.

Reminder: NSW Curriculum Review Interim Report: Have your say
The Review is a once in a generation opportunity for NSW to understand how the curriculum can be better taught, assessed and reported.
As part of the review, teachers are being asked questions such as:
- How can the burden of compliance activities be reduced for schools while still maintaining effective accountability and oversight?
- For which syllabuses is a reduction in the amount of content most required?
- Should literacy and numeracy and social and emotional development be prioritised over other mandated areas of the curriculum for children who require this?
- Should reporting be focused on communicating the points individuals have reached in their long term progress in an area of learning?
- What more could be done to address concerns that end-of-school examinations promote the memorisation and ‘regurgitation’ of pre-prepared answers?
- Would the redefinition of learning areas reduce the current academic-vocational dichotomy/ tension?
These are important questions and their answers will affect every teacher in our Diocesan schools. It is important that our teachers have their say.
Have your say. To read the executive summary in the report (only four pages) and submit a response, click here.
