This week we explore the close connection between the Catholic school and the wider Church.
The Church documents state, ’The complexity of the modern world makes it all the more necessary to increase awareness of ecclesial identity of a Catholic school. It is from its Catholic identity that the school derives its original characteristics and its “structure” as a genuine instrument of the Church, a place of real and specific pastoral ministry. The Catholic school participates in the evangelising mission of the Church and is the privileged environment in which Christian education is carried out’. (The Catholic School on the threshold of the Third Millennium, 11)
We must continue to remind ourselves of what mission/identity is all about. Pope Paul VI said in EVANGELII NUNTIANDI, “The Catholic Church does not have a Mission she ‘is’ a mission”.

Congratulations William Abell, Fred Hollows Humanity Award
A Year 6 student at St Peter's Primary School, Port Macquarie has been recognised with a Fred Hollows Humanity Award at the University of Technology, Sydney. The award recognises William's compassion, integrity and kindness in his creation of the school's Lids for Kids initiative. The 12-year-old's campaign has seen the school population collect 5700 plastic lids and caps which are turned into prosthetic arms for children in developing countries.
"It's pretty cool. You need about 500 lids to create a prosthetic arm."
"Mum and I saw a website on Facebook and I thought it was a really good idea."
"At school we are always encouraged to do good things and to help people."
William prepared a speech which he presented to Principal, Geoff Leary. The school embraced the idea and collections kicked off last term.
Envision Hands is a project to collect plastic recyclable waste destined for landfills and turn it into filament for 3D printers, then making hands for kids.
"It feels really good that we are making a future (for children from developing countries) and that technology helps us make these prosthetic arms," William said.
Congratulations William and St Peter's Primary School, Port Macquarie.
“Christ is alive! He is our hope, and in a wonderful way He brings youth to our world, and everything He touches becomes young, new, full of life.” These are the very first words Pope Francis writes to all young people and the wider Church in his most recent exhortation Christus Vivit.
SHINE embodies this message and the 700 participants who gathered at St John Paul College, Coffs Harbour for the annual Gathering, left renewed and full of life.
