6. The Daily Soul
Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is risen, and life reigns! Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in a tomb! For Christ, being raised from the dead, has become the first-fruits of them that have slept. To Him be glory and might unto the ages of ages. Amen.
~ St John Chrysostom ~
This powerful ending to the Easter Homily of St John Chrysostom (347-407CE), highlights the life-giving treasure we received from Christ's Passion and Resurrection. As this Easter season continues against a background of pandemic-induced social isolation, let’s focus on these simple words - ‘And life reigns!'
The Daily Soul continues in Term 2 to support the pastoral care of staff through a focus on spiritual communion, prayer and personal formation. A selection of resources will also be available to help students in the blended learning environment.
Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, we remember with thanksgiving those who made the supreme sacrifice for us in time or war. We pray that the offering of their lives may not have been in vain. May your grace enable us this day to dedicate ourselves to the cause of justice, freedom and peace; and give us the wisdom and strength to build a better world, for the honour and glory of your Name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Bishop Greg invited us into a mini-retreat throughout the Easter Triduum. An average of 5000 viewers followed our spiritual leader via the live-streamed liturgies and heard his insightful yet simple message. The links below point to each of Bishop Greg’s homilies. We invite you to journey once again into this mini-retreat throughout the remainder of the Easter Season. Click the images for the respective homily.
In 2011, Catholic singer-songwriter Matt Maher released this anthemic Easter Song, Christ is Risen. Revealing the source of inspiration for the song as the remarkable sermon by St John Chrysostom, quoted in the introduction to this edition of The Daily Soul, Maher points out that Jesus used death to destroy death. He goes on, “even though we still struggle and we are still imperfect people, we can still celebrate the victory that God has granted us through his Son.”
