Dean Chapman was selected as one of twenty six finalists for Australia's most prestigious school science and engineering awards.
The BHP Foundation Science and Engineering Awards are a partnership between CSIRO, BHP Foundation and the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA), recognising the best and brightest student researchers and innovators in the country.
Dean's independent research project "The Effect of Irrigation" concentrated on the impacts different levels of irrigation have on the quality and quantity of a triticale crop (a hybrid cereal produced by crossing wheat and rye) grown for hay production.
Dean explains his project in a great short video - https://vimeo.com/386871990 and more information on the awards can be found at www.scienceawards.org.au.
Dean attended the awards ceremony in Melbourne on the 4th February and while he didn't walk away as a major award winner, his family and school are immensely proud of his achievements. Dean has embraced the experience of being a finalist and is planning his next project. Congratulations Dean!

The program was a lively mixture of seminars and workshops facilitated by Bishop Greg Homeming, School Evangelisation and Catechetical Services (SEACS), Fr Paul Winter, Fr Joe DSouza, and guest speakers David Kobler and Sr Bernadette Toohey MGL. Diocesan Youth Worship Band, Wildfire, provided the worship music for the gathering.
This is the second year the Catholic Schools Office (CSO) has hosted the Lismore YMO Equipping School. The School provides the basics in kerygma, discipleship, prayer, skills for Youth Ministry, communication and teamwork. The teachings are based on the ACU Signum Fidei course, research from Fr Chris Ryan MGL and insight from the Holy Fathers. The team of presenters provided high-quality input from their extensive ministry experiences and the YMOs were eager to learn as Bishop Greg guided the group’s spiritual formation. Bishop Greg set the scene with a quote from Socrates, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” He continued by sharing his hope for the young people in his Diocese to “come out as better and transformed people. Always be reaching out to other people. Break out of the selfishness that comes naturally by considering the need of other people. Do things for other people, care, be concerned; it’s the step that stops the movement towards selfishness. Actively, you need to be out there with other people, that is prayer. We need to befriend ourselves, others and God”.
The YMOs left the School eager and inspired by the words of Jesus in Luke’s gospel, the theme of the week, “Young person, I say to you arise!” Thank you to all those who contributed to the success of the 2020 YMO Equipping School.
