St Joseph's Regional College, Port Macquarie, Year 10 student Esther Cummins was offered a wonderful opportunity to attend the University of Sydney Indigenous Australian Engineering School (IAES). (15-22 January 2023)
Congratulations to St Joseph's Regional College, Port Macquarie, Year 10 student Esther Cummins on being selected to participate in the University of Sydney Indigenous Australian Engineering School (IAES).
Esther was one of only 25 students selected Australia-wide to participate in this annual event that ran from 15-22 January.
‘Esther continues to be a strong young Aboriginal leader and is well-deserving of this opportunity,’ said Indigenous Education Worker Carly Taylor.
Engineering Aid Australia established and funded the Indigenous Australian Engineering School in 1996 to provide exciting hands-on learning and cultural experiences.
Esther was immersed in learning tasks such as designing a floating house and a new tourist attraction for Goat Island on Sydney Harbour. She experienced the Sydney engineering marvels first-hand by climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and exploring the design strategy for the Opera House.
During the truly unique experience, Esther networked with major Engineering companies. She witnessed Australia’s leading-edge technology, such as the world's first robotic system that organises and checks gas cylinders for defects and the world-class Crashlab that researches road and passenger safety.
Esther was awarded ‘The Hon RJL (Bob) Hawke Capacity for Leadership Award,’ an award that recognises contributions made by the recipients during the Summer School and within their respective communities.
Esther has qualified for an Engineering Aid Australia Continuing School scholarship to help with education expenses from Years 10 to 12. Esther will be eligible for an Engineering Aid Australia Tertiary Education Scholarship.
Esther displayed her leadership skills when she gave a speech on behalf of the group at Admiralty House to the Governor General, who is Engineering Aid's patron.
‘I learnt so much at this camp and got to meet so many people and learn from their experiences in their various fields of engineering,’ said Esther.
We commend Esther for her excellent participation in this highly regarded program and wish her the best in her studies.

It's the perfect time to reset your spiritual and sometimes emotional and physical self. This Lenten prayer resource is a simple way to share the traditions of Lent within your family.
Parent Assembly is also offering a free copy of the excellent Wollongong diocesan weekly Lenten prayer resource. If you'd like to register for a free copy, CLICK HERE.

Title: Sunburnt Country
Statement: I was inspired by Australian poets who romanticised the rugged Australian landscape and used this inspiration in the garment by romanticising the traditionally rugged Driza-Bone jacket into a soft, satin duster coat with custom printed fabric. Underneath is a dress which captures the beauty of the night sky incorporating laser cutting to add movement. I also created a belt incorporating LED lights to reflect the Southern Cross and night sky.

$20 Boss is a free-to-access program, run by Young Change Agents (a social enterprise), that provides a tangible way of supporting students to learn, identify and build their entrepreneurial skills. $20 Boss supports students to find and solve a real problem, helping them to better understand their relationship with money and how to make a difference to the world. Enterprise skills (such as critical thinking, teamwork and creativity) are crucial for preparing students for the future.
The program is based upon students being loaned $20 to bring a business idea to life. At the end of the program, students return the $20 plus $1 legacy. They then get to decide what to do with the profit they make - with most deciding to donate a portion to charity and some reinvesting in their business to keep the business going. $20 Boss is aligned with the NSW Curriculum across Religious Education, English and Mathematics.
We are calling for Expressions of Interest from all schools within our diocese who would like to run the program with their students. If interested, please complete and submit this form.
The RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Commemoration was first held in 1953 and co-hosted by RSL NSW and the Department of Education. Over the years the service has expanded to Catholic Schools NSW and the Association of Independent Schools NSW. Proceedings, held at the Anzac Memorial Hyde Park in April each year, are delivered entirely by school students including the Master of Ceremonies, keynote address, readings, and musical accompaniment. The Service also includes an Inspection of the Guard by the official party, The Ode, The Last Post, and Rouse.
The service aims to educate primary and secondary school students about Australia’s military history, whilst paying respect to the service and sacrifice of servicemen and women of the Australian Defence Force.
To mark the 71st Anniversary of this service in 2024, RSL NSW, the Department of Education, Catholic Schools NSW and the Association of Independent Schools NSW are launching an art competition for NSW school students. The theme of the competition is “Why Lest we Forget?”, inviting students to create an artwork that considers why we commemorate ANZAC Day. Two artworks will be selected for the cover of the 2024 service program and all finalists’ artworks will be displayed at the Anzac Memorial and included in the program.
More information including the guidelines, how to submit artwork, judging and FAQs can be found in the link below.
