Supporting a preservice teacher can be a valuable part of a teacher’s role. AITSL has produced four flexible learning modules to enhance a supervising teacher’s knowledge, skill and confidence to effectively coach and mentor preservice teachers. The modules are:
- effective partnerships
- practice analysis
- making judgements
- unpacking the Graduate Standards.
To enrol visit the AITSL Website.
Teachers who supervise preservice and early career teachers are able to record the time spent coaching and mentoring as NESA Elective Professional Learning. This would be the component of time spent in professional dialogue with the beginning teacher about the development of practice under an identified Standard Descriptor. Entries refer to the time spent in dialogue, for example providing feedback after a lesson observation (not the duration of the placement) and need to be recorded incrementally in etams (not as one large summary). Supervising teachers would choose to reflect against Highly Accomplished Standard Descriptors as they are ‘supporting colleagues to…’.
Teachers are reminded that mandatory training can be logged in etams as NESA Elective PD. A ‘Cheat Sheet’ is provided here.
Early career teachers who intend to finalise mandatory accreditation at Proficient this year are reminded that they need to ensure their Mentor and the Regional Mentor agree that the submission meets NESA requirements before submitting into etams. Please allow enough time for feedback loops to occur. Submissions to be processed by the Diocese of Lismore TAA must be submitted to etams before the end of October this year to give the Supervisor and Principal time to perform their roles and so the submission reaches the TAA no later than Friday, 4 November 2022.
As part of Teacher Accreditation reform, NESA will assume the role of decision maker from 29 November 2022. Early career teachers who submit after this date will still need to ensure that their Mentor and the Regional Mentor agree that the submission meets NESA requirements before submitting into etams. There is no change to NESA requirements for mandatory accreditation at Proficient.
The Digital Learning Team last term piloted a new NESA Accredited course called, Tello Edu Drones for Beginners at two locations. A big thank you goes to Andrew Evans, Leader of Learning HSIE at MacKillop College, Port Macquarie, as well as Natasha Green, Leader of Learning HSIE at McAuley Catholic College, Grafton, for being the first to facilitate the course.
The course feedback to date has been positive, Andrew Evans said Tello Edu Drones for Beginners was "fun, engaging and productive".
The course, which is worth 3.5 hours of NESA Accredited PD, is intended to teach practising teachers how to use and integrate Tello Edu Drones into their teaching programs. It is a blended learning experience divided into three parts - one self-paced online component hosted on Moodle, one face-to-face workshop and one Zoom webinar. Although parts one and two can easily be combined if you have a room with a large display TV that is also suitable for flying drones.
If you have experience flying and coding Tello Edu Drones with either the Tello Edu App or the Drone Blocks App then you would be very welcome to become a facilitator of Tello Edu Drones for Beginners. Should you wish to become a facilitator you will be provided with all the training materials required to run the course including educational videos hosted on Moodle, a drones obstacle course kit, a classroom-based workshop session plan and a powerpoint presentation.
Teachers at McAuley Catholic College, Grafton learn to block code a drone using the Tello Edu App.
We are now taking expressions of interest for Term 4. If you are an experienced Tello Edu Drones user and you would like to facilitate Tello Edu Drones for Beginners for a group of teachers at your school, then please reach out to JJ Purton Jones so that a course schedule can be arranged for you.
