Mount St Patrick Primary School, Murwillumbah, Year 6 student Freya Payne was named runner-up in the Jesse Blackadder Memorial Prize in the 2022 Byron Bay Writers Festival. (12 August 2022)
Congratulations to Freya Payne a Year 6 Mount St Patrick Primary School, Murwillumbah, for being named Runner-up in the Jesse Blackadder Memorial Prize at the 2022 Byron Bay Writers Festival for her outstanding picture book ‘My Two Big Dogs.’
The Jesse Blackadder Memorial Prize was created in 2020 in memory of Jesse Blackadder, author and founder of Byron Writers Festival’s StoryBoard program. The prize celebrates the creativity and imagination of student writers in Stage 3.
Young writers were asked to write an original short story on any theme from 500 to 1000 words. Freya’s story was constructed during the school’s daily silent writing sessions and recounted her wonderful memories of her two dogs, Juno and Moby.
The judges' feedback for Freya was very positive, ‘This is a relatable story of love and loss. The writer uses white space and clear, short sentences to convey a universal emotional truth.’
Freya's proud teacher, Tim Waugh, was very impressed by Freya's writing.
‘Her word choices, her economical, very deliberate choice of language elicits a very powerful emotional response in the reader,' said Mr Waugh.
To celebrate Freya’s success, the school has published her beautifully written story in a picture book for the library. Freya was very excited to know that her book had been borrowed.
‘I was very surprised but happy that people are enjoying my story,’ said Freya.
Congratulations to Freya on her success.

The newsletter aims to provide an insight into recent happenings in education in the Diocese for priests and parishioners. Currently, we plan to publish four editions per year to bring parishioners updates from the Board, the Director of Schools, the Catholic Schools Office and a selection of schools.

The theme for this year’s SHINE was ‘No Limits’, referring to the limitless nature of God’s love for us. This year, we welcomed 500 students and 50 teachers, as well as special guests and keynote speakers, including Josh Angrisano, Sr Therese Mills MGL, Melinda Tankard Reist and Daniel Principe. We were also joined by Clergy and AP Mission members from both primary and secondary schools. SHINE also features testimonies from students in our schools and small groups, which provide an opportunity for peer-to-peer ministry.
Other features of SHINE included music from the diocesan worship team ‘Wildfire’, games, engaging videos, breakout sessions, dramas, adoration, prayer experiences and a very special concluding Mass. It was great to be back, and we look forward to expanding and enhancing this program in the future.
This beautiful video featuring Youth Ministry students from some of our schools was played during SHINE. Check out the Proclaim Lismore Students Facebook page for more great content from SHINE.

Title: That Which is Loved Will Endure
My Body of Work captures shared memories and experiences with both horses and my grandfather; deep connections, and close relationships. My grandfather was a beautiful human and great horseman. Sadly, he passed away while my work progressed, and so now it pays tribute to him. Drawing and dry point etching allows for intricate details along with the small scale, depicting the intimate bond between myself, my horses and my Pa. This invites the audience into our shared experiences and my memories.
The Catholic Schools NSW – CSSA Catholic Secondary Schools Forum will be held on Thursday, 3 November 2022, at the Sydney Masonic Centre, Sydney. The Symposium theme ‘On the Horizon’ reflects our shared commitment to engaging in current and emerging issues in secondary education in Catholic schools. The symposium program will engage participants to reflect upon change within their school and beyond.
Catholic Schools NSW invites Principals, School Leadership, Key Learning Area Coordinators, VET Coordinators, Career Practitioners and Stage 4–6 Year Coordinators in Catholic education to join us.
This symposium can be recorded as 5.5hrs of NESA Elective PD, and the agenda is available here: 2022 CSNSW CSSA Catholic Secondary Schools Forum Agenda-03112022.

CSNSW is in partnership with the Science Teachers Association NSW for the “Meet the Marker HSC Analysis 2022 Series”.
One of the most helpful and sought-after types of professional learning for senior secondary teachers is participation in marking Higher School Certificate Examinations in their subject area. Unfortunately, that opportunity is not accessible to all teachers so the Science Teachers Association of NSW has designed a professional learning activity for those who cannot be involved in marking.
The “Meet the Marker HSC Analysis 2022 Series” includes the Stage 6 Science course workshops for Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, Physics, Investigating and Extension Science. Each video is 2 hours in length and consists of HSC markers unpacking the results of the previous year’s HSC science exam questions and can be recorded as NESA Elective PD. This has been a highly popular form of professional learning and places are limited.
Meet the Markers is also highly recommended for both early career teachers taking senior classes for the first time and experienced practitioners.
