Year 7 & 8 students at St Joseph’s College, Banora Point, become geospatial scientists and explore applications of drone technology in an exciting and innovative real-world experience. (1 July 2022)
St Joseph’s College, Banora Point, Year 7 & 8, were provided with a wonderful opportunity to gain real-world experience using state-of-the-art drone technology.
The Catholic Schools Office has partnered with She Maps, an organisation that aims to increase STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects in schools, and the University of Southern Queensland on a project highlighting STEM opportunities to students.
This exciting project started with teachers gaining firsthand experience in using drones and exploring new ways to link learning experiences to the curriculum.
Next, She Maps along with Surf Life Saving NSW’s Australian UAV Service Team facilitated a Classroom Drone Essential Course with excited students. After learning to fly and code drones, the students became geospatial scientists for the day and received their junior drone pilot licence.
During the sessions, the students were taught the rules and regulations for safe flying and then experienced being the pilot, the co-pilot and the observer whilst flying the drones. This brilliant initiative provides students with hands-on experience for potential career pathways in the drone industry.
‘The drone course was great for expanding my technology and coding knowledge and skills. It gave me the opportunity to explore drone occupations in a fun and safe environment. I experimented with my coding, measurement and direction skills. Learning with the Surf Lifesavers was a truly great experience,’ said Year 7 student Hailey.
‘I enjoyed the coding, flipping the drone, and making my drone fly a path around the map. I learnt that if you don’t get the coding perfect, you can learn and improve it next time. I also enjoyed pairing up with other students and using all our skills to perfectly land the drone safely,’ said Year 7 student Lalita.
‘I really enjoyed learning how to fly a drone using coding. I think it would be an interesting job to use a drone to search for things and map out areas. I hope we get to do something like this again,’ said Year 7 student Scarlett.
‘We are really excited to start using drone technology as a tool to enhance teaching and learning, and support innovative pedagogy at St Joseph’s College,’ said Leader of Learning Technologies, Georgia James.
Secondary schools involved in this project in 2022 are St John Paul College, Coffs Harbour, MacKillop College, Port Macquarie, McAuley Catholic College, Grafton, and Xavier Catholic College, Ballina.
Managed Apple IDs are accounts designed specifically for schools that enable students and staff to personalise their devices and access key services from Apple. We have been working to enable federated authentication with Google Workspace and our central Apple School Manager instance to provide a Managed Apple ID for all students and staff. This will happen in term 4, 2022. For more information, please see attached Managed Apple IDs document.
Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher Policy (2022) update – Prospective Applicants
HALT accreditation recognises highly effective, innovative and exemplary teaching practices. HALT accreditation is voluntary and is nationally certified. The new HALT Policy describes how accreditation is achieved through the completion of three modules- a process regarded as far more “doable” than in the past.
NESA is offering the following orientation session for teachers to develop an understanding of Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher accreditation. This session will explain how to apply under the revised HALT policy (2022).
- Thursday, 11th August 2022 at 4.00 PM AEST (online)
- Wednesday, 17th August 2022 at 4.30 PM AEST (online)
- Tuesday, 13th September 2022 at 4.00 PM AEST (online)
NESA outlines the steps involved in HALT Accreditation on the website. If you decide to embark on HALT Accreditation, please contact Lead, Teacher Accreditation Leisa Fisher (0408676252)
The Lismore Diocese HSC Showcase celebrates and captures the talents of our students, reflecting their creativity, innovation, technical skills and conceptual development. These projects represent the culmination of months of diligence and commitment by students, planning and designing, developing their skills and applying them to the task of creating inspirational and engaging works.

Title: Echols Desk
My unique desk contrasts a dark timber body (Jarrah) and a light timber top (American Rock Maple). Brass inlays complement the two timbers and add an antique aspect to the modern style. Processes to construct the desk included template flush cutting for the legs and rails, dovetail jigs for the drawers, and housing jigs and mortise and tenon jigs for the frames. The drawer runners sit underneath, so the drawers appear to be floating and are positioned, so they are invisible at any angle. My most notable feature is the inlay, which I made using the computer numerically controlled router.
CSNSW is providing an exciting professional learning opportunity for all school staff from K – 12 in a virtual format on Monday, 10 October 2022, from 9.00 am to 3.30 pm.
Schools will be able to engage as a full staff or as individual staff members. The day will offer access to a range of international and national presenters, including keynote speakers:
- Professor Jim Tognolini, CEMA University of Sydney
- Dr Jared Cooney, Horvath Educational Neuroscientist and author, University of Melbourne.
Teachers will select up to three workshops to attend virtually, across a range of areas, broadly focusing on primary, secondary and wellbeing. Workshops will be available in both synchronous and asynchronous modes, delivered by a range of educators from both school and university sectors.
There is no cost to participants joining the day. A more comprehensive program will be available in later editions of Scholaris.
The symposium is pending NESA Accreditation, and for this purpose, we require individual teacher registration by following the link HERE.
