Three St Augustine’s Primary School, Coffs Harbour, students won the 2021 STEM MAD Event in the ‘Wellbeing Category - Primary School’ section. (16 November 2021)
Congratulations to St Augustine’s Primary School, Coffs Harbour, Year 6 students Maggie, Harper and Malia for coming first place in the 2021 STEM MAD (Make A Difference) Competition in the Wellbeing Primary School Category.
STEM MAD is a National competition that encourages students in Catholic Schools to address real-world problems and to ‘Make a Difference’ in the world by acting for justice and the common good. Participants were required to identify the way their solution or product intends to make a difference through the lens of Catholic Stewardship, solidarity, common good, citizenship, humanity and wellbeing.
Earlier in the year, the St Augustine’s team won the Diocesan level of the competition, gaining a hard-earned place in the virtual National competition alongside finalists from other Catholic schools around Australia.
The St Augustine's team concept was called the ‘Commotion Controller’. This idea is a visual cue for students to know when they’re getting too loud in the classroom. The product is designed to increase student focus in the class and support students with sensory needs. Their invention was also placed in the Top 3 across all primary school categories.
‘The students persisted with this project when they came up against technical obstacles and, using their newfound skills, re-programmed the device to better suit the classroom setting,’ said Principal Peter Watts.
‘We had such fun trying to solve the difficult problems. It was a lot of trial and error,’ said the team.
You can learn more about their design process and prototype in their video submission.
Caritas Australia invites representatives from schools in the Diocese of Lismore to attend the virtual launch of Project Compassion 2022.
Schools may wish to register the following groups for the launch:
- Years 5-6 class groups
- Primary school student leaders and/or justice group members

Staff are reminded of the need to advise the Catholic Schools Office (CSO) through the Jotform link below with the renewal details of their Working with Children Check (WWCC) prior to their current expiry date. The renewal process can be actioned up to three months prior to a current expiry date.
The Office of the Children’s Guardian is extremely busy at this time of year. You can renew your WWCC number anytime within a three-month period prior to your expiry date.
Please do not wait until the last month. If your expiry date is in January or February take action early. Visit the Office of the Children’s Guardian to begin the process.
If your WWCC expires during January or February, you must provide these details to the CSO prior to the start of 2022 school year via the link below.
If you do not renew in time, it can affect your work with children and, if a teacher, your accreditation with NESA.

CSNSW and the Department support teams continue to investigate why teachers and principals can log into Scout but not see the NAPLAN reports, seeing either a blank page or just the Custom Groups report. This has been identified as a major priority for resolution.
As a Diocesan user some CSO staff may also be experiencing access issues with SCOUT, and data upload issues with ALAN. For staff who can access Scout they may find the NAPLAN Reports missing, and not all schools from the diocese evident in the list. Other issues being experienced include staff receiving permission errors when SCOUT tries to list the NAPLAN reports, and errors that indicate AGEID is incorrect when uploading student data into ALAN. CSNSW has also escalated this matter as a high priority.
REMINDER that all Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools Limited employees will receive a reduced amount of pay on Wednesday, 1 December, due to the changeover from a Pay-in-advance model to a Pay-in-arrears model.
Attached is a flyer that explains what is happening, along with a 2-minute video.
