St Joseph's Primary, Wauchope, hosted 'Lemonade Day' to raise awareness and funds for Motor Neurone Disease in support of the inspiring story of the Adkins family, members of Wauchope’s school community. (18 June 2021)
St Joseph's Primary School, Wauchope, hosted a spectacular whole school community event, 'Lemonade Day', to raise money and awareness for father Matt Adkins' battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
St Joseph's Primary's idea behind a 'lemonade' theme comes from the saying, 'When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,' a motto of the Adkins Family.
Students were joined by their families as they learned about MND through the Adkins family's inspiring message that you can still make lemonade events under challenging circumstances and live with a positive can-do attitude.
The school community enjoyed a whole school picnic lunch with lots of yummy lemon treats and fun activities including a relay event involving running and lemon squeezing between Year 6 and St Joseph's staff. The day's main event was the MND Big Freeze 7 Ice Bucket Challenge, with students nominating seven brave staff members to have ice-cold buckets of water tipped over them.
'We really appreciate the school and community support. It was great that we were able to raise awareness for MND in a fun and colourful way, highlighting the resilience and a positive mindset towards life's challenges,' said mother Bianca Adkins.
'Today was a true example to the St Joseph's Primary School, Wauchope community spirit. It was wonderful to have students and families participate in our Lemonade Day,' stated Principal Brendan Kiely.
This fantastic display of school community spirit and compassion raised $3,500.

The Celebrating Reconciliation Grants Program provides funding for local communities to host events that encourage participation in National Reconciliation Week.
National Reconciliation Week is a national campaign, held from 27 May to 3 June, celebrating and building on respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and non-Indigenous Australians. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey—the successful 1967 referendum to change how Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples were referred to in the Constitution (27 May), and the 1992 High Court Mabo decision (3 June).
The week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians to create a nation strengthened by respectful relationships.
Applications for grants of up to $15,000 (exclusive of GST) are now being accepted. For more information please click on the link: https://www.qld.gov.au/firstnations/grants-funding/celebrating-reconciliation

This week, the NSW Minister for Education released the new K-2 English and Mathematics Syllabuses on a newly developed digital platform. The links are below:
The syllabuses are part of a new streamlined NSW curriculum website, which has been designed to save teacher's time and help them to focus on what is essential for students to learn. This is the first release of the Digital Curriculum which will be further developed. NESA is encouraging feedback to improve functionality and further refine the Digital Curriculum platform. You can share your feedback via the Give us your feedback tab on the homepage.
Implementation begins in schools in 2022 with the new syllabuses needing to be taught in all NSW primary schools from 2023. Thank you to the K-2 Teachers, Principals and Leaders of Learning who attended the recent Reflection and Feedback sessions. Your feedback will inform the system's strategic plan to support schools with the implementation in 2022. The system is currently engaging with CSNSW to finalise details for the implementation phase for our diocese. We will work with schools on the implementation as we receive information from NESA and CSNSW.
For consistency of practice across the Learning Collaborative schools, the scripts and templates for Case Management meetings and Follow-up Case Management meetings can be accessed on the Lyn Sharratt Learning Collaborative site.
Staff are reminded that the MyCompliance System will be undergoing an update this weekend and will be unavailable from 5pm Friday 19 November until 8am Monday 22 November. The title ‘Policy’ on the main menu bar will be changed to ‘Regulation’ during this process in addition to other minor improvements.
REMINDER that all Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools Limited employees will receive a reduced amount of pay on Wednesday, 1 December, due to the changeover from a Pay-in-advance model to a Pay-in-arrears model.
