Mount St Patrick Primary School, Murwillumbah, Year 4 student Rafe McAndrew won a writing competition to give celebrated Australian children’s author Andy Griffiths ideas for his next book. (26 October 2021)
Congratulations to Mount St Patrick Primary School, Murwillumbah, Year 4 student Rafe McAndrew for coming first in the Squiz Kids writing competition.
Mount St Patrick’s Year 4 students were excited to learn that they would be entering a creative writing competition held by the Australian children's news podcast Squiz Kids. The competition celebrated Australian children’s author Andy Griffiths and illustrator Terry Denton's new book ‘The 143-Storey Treehouse’. Participants were asked to provide Andy Griffiths with ideas for his next book in the ever-expanding ‘Treehouse’ series by writing a 250-word paragraph about their most creative treehouse room and an illustration.
Year 4 eagerly participated in the task of creating their own room in the incredible treehouse.
‘I was so impressed with the whole class's entries; their enthusiasm and engagement in the task was very high. They all love Andy Griffiths books, so this was an awesome writing competition to enter,’ said Year 4 teacher Elise Gallagher.
Squiz Kids announced on 19 October that Andy Griffiths chose Rafe’s idea out of hundreds of entries across Australia. Rafe’s winning entry said:
'A mischief making room where you can make mischief all day. For instance, throwing cream pies at each other, typing people's shoelaces together, swatting people with fly swatters, giving people smacks on the bottom, putting whoopee cushions under innocent people, and last but not least, Terry's personal army of Mischief Making Robot Droids.'
‘I was filled with joy and excitement when I heard my idea had won and that it was going to be in one of Andy Griffiths storey treehouse books,’ said Rafe.
We are very happy for Rafe and look forward to reading more about his room in Andy Griffiths next ‘Treehouse’ book.

Schools are invited to participate in the pilot program during Term 4. Feedback from the pilot will inform further development of a broader range of resources. Further information and access to registration can be found here.

A smaller working party was created in Term 4 2020 to develop materials to support schools across the Diocese addressing these five Key Elements for High Potential and Gifted Education. To plot a school’s current understanding of the five Key Elements, the Advancement Matrix found on the new Intranet pages is an essential resource and starting point. The Matrix enables each school to establish a clear professional learning direction that can be contextualised for their own school context. The Advancement Matrix is accompanied by inquiry questions to guide thinking. Resources and materials linked to the Elements can also be found on the New Intranet pages. The intentionally designed graphics and Professional Learning Package gives a clear direction to schools to support the development of policies and procedures and to plan future directions for enhancing the education for ALL learners.
A Professional Learning Package is in development and will be available later this term.
Schools may wish to use these resources when planning their school improvement agenda for 2022. Please contact a member of the Learning Services team for any clarification and support needed.
These materials can be found on the intranet here under the Learning and Teaching tab.
