Congratulations Olivia Mosse, Senior Geography Competition Winner
Congratulations to St John’s College, Lismore Year 12 student Olivia Mosse for winning the Brock Rowe Senior Geography Fieldwork Competition against a field of strong entries.
The competition invited senior students from across NSW and ACT to help foster enthusiasm for Geography and required students to investigate a topic of their choosing and incorporate geographic inquiry.
Matthew Bailey, Leader of Curriculum at St John’s College, is proud of Olivia’s achievement, 'She is a dedicated student who seeks out success in all aspects of her academic life. Olivia worked extremely hard on her Senior Geography Project, and I am happy that the award acknowledges and celebrates her diligence and commitment to study.'
Reflecting on Olivia’s achievements Principal, Aaron Beach said that, 'Olivia is an outstanding student who works assiduously on anything she undertakes, and this award is a testament to her diligence. Olivia is a great role model for all Woodlawn students, and the entire College community are proud of her and offer our collective congratulations on this wonderful achievement.'
Olivia offered advice for senior geography students, 'organisation is key. If you plan ahead for primary data collection, such as conducting interviews, you will avoid any last-minute rush. Finally, teachers are there to help, so if you have any questions, just ask!'

Catholic education in the Diocese of Lismore, along with other likeminded Catholic entities have formed a working group, the Australian Anti-Slavery Network (ACAN). Along with all ACAN participating entities, we believe that action against modern slavery is fundamental to Catholic social teaching.
In 2018*, it was reported that over 40.3 million people worldwide are enslaved, with the highest number in the Asia Pacific Region. 15,000 victims are estimated to be in Australia. Modern slavery refers to situations of exploitation where a person cannot refuse or leave employment, because of threats, violence, coersion, abuse of power or deception.
Although modern slavery is illegal, millions of people continue to be trapped in factories, fields, fisheries and mines. People become trapped in modern slavery by poverty, vulnerability, corruption and systems that create the conditions and opportunties for it to exist and even flourish.
In December 2018, the Australian Government passed the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) requiring Australia’s largest not-for-profit entities and for-profit businesses to take steps to assess and address modern slavery in their supply chains and operations.
Participation in ACAN equips participating Catholic entities with resources and tools to prepare their Modern Slavery Statement and how to train and raise their employees’ awareness of Modern Slavery issues via e-learning modules and resources.
If you’d like to learn more, visit the Australian Anti-Slavery Network (ACAN) website or read our Modern Slavery Statement here.
