St Paul's College, Kempsey has won the 2020 Australian Training Awards School Pathways to VET Award which was announced on Friday 20 November.
St Paul’s College was selected for the quality of its teaching staff and the exceptional standard of its innovative and high quality programs in Primary Industries, Construction and Hospitality. St Paul's College focus on establishing and maintaining stakeholder partnerships has been critical in not only winning the award but most importantly in giving solid career opportunities for students.
Graham Bramley, Agriculture Teacher and Leader of Vocational Education and Training, said the College’s 105 hectare College Farm gives Primary Industry students opportunities to learn skills including fencing, how to grow crops, drive tractors and farm management. The College also operates Tallowood Stud on the Farm where the students breed Devon cattle. Students participating in the Hospitality course have a state-of-the-art industrial kitchen in the McAuley Centre while students undertaking Construction have outstanding facilities in the Ignatius Construction Centre.
This is the second year whereby a Diocese of Lismore Catholic School has achieved a national VET award. Congratulations also to Sue Watts, Jill Cummings and Josie Busby for their work and support of school in the VET area.

St Joseph's College, Banora Point Space Wattle Seeds
St Joseph's College, Banora Point, will be one of the lucky recipients of wattle seeds that will have spent 6 months on the International Space Station. The seeds will be grown as part of a nationwide science experiment with One Giant Leap Australia Foundation. This is a fantastic opportunity to participate in exciting, solid Science, allows our students to grasp the power the scientific method has to satisfy their curiosity and pave the way for a future that may take us beyond the confines of Earth.
The seeds will be in space for 6 months and then return to Australia in time for Science Week 2021. This video was submitted as part of the application by the amazing SJC Space Crew.

St Joseph's Primary School, Coraki Arts Partnership Grant
St Joseph's Primary School, Coraki was successful in receiving an Arts Partnership Grant in 2020, that focused on mentoring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to connect to culture and community. Aunty Nay learnt alongside the students in a mentoring capacity and as a strong role model for Indigenous leadership. The deadly jarjums have become strong, resilient and capable leaders in their school and community, sharing their journey with family and friends during NAIDOC week.

NESA website: New fact sheets have been added to NESA’s curriculum reform website. At the bottom of the landing page, you can submit your email address to receive updates as they become available.
Teacher Expert Networks (‘TENs’): CSNSW has asked Diocesan Directors to nominate teachers who will participate in cross sectoral ‘TENs’. These teachers will perform a critical function in advising NESA about implementation support and professional learning during the curriculum reform process. Teacher participants will reflect the full range of experience of the current teaching workforce, from early career teachers to those who are very experienced. NESA has also requested nominations from teachers with expertise in working with children and young people with special needs, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and students whose first language is a language other than English.
English and Mathematics K–2 reform: Consultation with teacher experts is underway. Learning First has been engaged to conduct research in schools to understand the ways in which teachers engage with current NESA syllabuses in K–6 English and Mathematics. The ‘public consultation’ phase of the curriculum reform process in early 2021 will provide all stakeholders with an opportunity to share feedback with NESA on specific reform proposals.
Review of ‘extra-curricular’ issues in the curriculum: As part of the work to ensure that the curriculum contains only essential knowledge and skills, NESA is reviewing ‘extra-curricular’ content in syllabuses.
‘Extra-curricular’ refers to the topics and content that have been added to syllabuses from outside of the usual syllabus development processes. Typically, ‘extra-curricular’ topics are responses to topical events, community concerns, and health and social issues.
The impact that extra-curricular topics have on teaching time will be evaluated, and the syllabuses adjusted. Protocols for including future extra-curriculum topics and content will also be reviewed.
In the context of the NSW Curriculum Reform, ‘extra-curricular’ activities and issues do not refer to outside-of-curriculum sports and cultural activities. Those sit with schools and communities, were not in the scope of the review, and will remain important.
Any queries or comments/suggestions regarding curriculum reform processes can be emailed to curriculumreform@csnsw.catholic.edu.au

CSNSW are pleased to provide you with a link to Classroom strategies for inclusive STEM learning environments. The recently launched online guide complements the Girls in STEM Toolkit (the GiST) website.
This information has been produced by Education Services Australia (ESA) and in support of the Australian Government's vision of an Australian society that provides equal opportunity for people of all genders to learn, work and engage in STEM. The guide is based on The Girls in STEM Toolkit's Seven principles for a gender-inclusive learning environment research that informed the development of the GiST.
To further support classroom application of the Principles, ESA engaged The University of Adelaide to undertake a systematic literature review of recent research on engagement in STEM education with a particular focus on girls and young women. The key research findings were then aligned to The GiST's Seven Principles for Inclusive STEM Education, resulting in a collection of practical strategies and resources that teachers can use to bring these critical Principles to life and create an engaging and inclusive STEM classroom.
For more information and to access the online version of the guide please visit the Gist website at www.thegist.edu.au.
We'd like to showcase the Christmas Celebrations in schools in the last edition of The Way for 2020. Please email your schools and class celebration photos to goodnews@lism.catholic.edu.au or share (with editing permissions) with leesa.kwok@lism.catholic.edu.au.
