This week we explore the second of the three ‘isms’ “Moral relativism”.
Moral relativism “has had a seismic impact on global culture over the last few hundred years. That impact is as strong and influential as ever. In essence it's simply the belief that truth, morality and the actions that flow from it are simply relative to one’s personal opinions to certain cultural expressions or to particular moments in history.
The Truth is not an idea or an opinion. The truth is a person whose name is Jesus. Jesus established a church and promised to send the Holy Spirit to guide it. That same Spirit is in us all and in our classrooms. What we offer to young people is the life, the teaching, the person of Jesus.”

Reading Buddy Program at St Carthage’s Primary School, Lismore
The ‘Reading Buddy’ program began in 2018 with two classes participating. This year the program has grown to six class groups, three classes from Years 4 and 5, who team up with three Year 2 groups. The older students are paired with a younger student on a term rotation, so the student gets to know at least four children from a different year group over the year. Each student is invited to the Library to select a book which they read to their buddy in a twenty-minute session. As the students get to know each other they are encouraged to choose books which the listener is interested in.
There are many benefits for this shared reading experience. Older readers build up their confidence in reading aloud to younger readers, as the books chosen are age appropriate. Younger readers are keen to read to the older student as they would normally not have this one on one interaction.
The different aged children participating in the Reading Buddy program have the opportunity to build communication skills and relationships which normally would not happen within a busy school environment especially in a school the size as St Carthage’s. The bonds created between the students are evident in the smiles as they spot their buddy coming into the classroom or run into them in the playground.
If you'd like to know more about the reading buddy program, contact Principal Janelle Heffernan on janelle.heffernan@lism.catholic.edu.au

Read LessAll employers in Australia with 20 or more employees are now required to report financial year to date information to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) after each pay period through Single Touch Payroll (STP).
This requirement has also changed how employers report employees' end of financial year (EOFY) information to employees and the ATO.
Employers are no longer required to provide employees with an EOFY payment summary for payments reported through STP.
How to Access Payment Summaries
In ATO online, through myGov, your payment summary will be called an income statement.
For the 2018-2019 financial year, employers have until 31 July 2019 to finalise your income statement.
You will need to wait until it is marked as tax ready before you lodge your tax return. The Catholic Schools Office will notify staff when income statements are tax ready.
Log into your myGov account, select ATO online services, click on 'View my income statements' to access your income statement.
If you use a registered agent to lodge your income tax return, your agent will receive your income statement directly from the ATO.
If you don't have access or cannot create a myGov account and don't use a registered agent you can contact the ATO on 13 28 61 and they'll provide the statement to you.
If you need help creating or logging in to your myGov account and linking to the ATO's online services, you can access helpful information at ato.gov.au/onlineservices.
Please see the attached ATO Fact Sheet for more information.
