Northern Rivers Green Innovation Awards
The future of our environment is looking a lot brighter, based on the ideas put forward for this year’s Green Innovation Awards. The Awards encourage students to develop a passion for the environment by asking them to invent, develop, and present solutions for greener living.
In Lismore on May 30, ten finalists presented their ideas before a panel of judges from the Dorroughby Environment Centre, Rous County Council, Southern Cross University, and the Catholic Schools Office.
St John’s College, Woodlawn Textile Circular Economy presentation won the secondary schools division. This project raises awareness around clothing production, waste and the ways in which clothing could be reused and recycled.
Winners Bella Griffiths and Tia Jagen from St John’s College, Woodlawn, said participating in the Green Innovation awards was fun and challenged them to come up with ideas for sustainable alternatives to the culture of disposable fashion.
St Ambrose, Pottsville, Waste Management Innovation project looked at developing fun ways to educate students to correctly use the coloured bin system such as videos, board games, posters, quizzes and an interactive app.
Trinity Catholic College, Creating Cultural Change project focused on understanding of the school’s impact on the environment and taking practical steps to
raise awareness and create change.
St Mary’s College, Casino, Sustainable Food Source project investigated how to breed crickets as an alternative and sustainable source of protein for people and livestock. The students even challenged the judges and audience to sample Cricket Protein Bars!
Congratulations to all students, staff and schools who entered the Green Innovation Awards, the presentations were innovative, informative and entertaining.
Bella and Tia's message for future participants, "Give it a go. You'd be surprised how many really interesting things you get to learn about how the things around us and the decisions we make that affect our environment. If we hadn't started this project, we would never have learnt about how most clothes will never biodegrade or about the conditions in which clothes are manufactured in thrid world countries."

2019 NAPLAN testing period has concluded with 454 NSW Catholic schools completing the tests online.
Despite technical disruptions, all schools were able to complete the tests within the 2 week testing window. Students who were impacted by technical disruptions were offered the opportunity to re-sit tests on 28 May. Schools should be commended on their thorough preparation for the delivery of the online tests; including the high level of training provided to NAPLAN co-ordinators and local IT teams. Catholic Schools NSW (CSNSW) would like to thank schools for the high level of professionalism and graciousness with which they responded to any difficulties experienced.
CSNSW continues to work with NESA to ensure efficient and timely delivery of tests results to schools as soon as they become available. Discussions with ACARA and ESA are also continuing to understand and remediate the underlying issues experienced during this testing period.
